Boudoir Photographer in the Bay Area | F64 Photography

Sacramento-based boudoir photographer traveling to the Bay Area. San Francisco hotels, coastal locations, and urban settings.

Why I Travel to the Bay Area

I am a Sacramento-based photographer. I shoot at hotels, homes, and outdoor locations throughout the Sacramento area. But the Bay Area pulls me back over and over because the locations there are unlike anything in the Central Valley. San Francisco hotel rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bay. Coastal beaches with dark sand and fog rolling in. Urban streets with texture, color, and architecture that photograph differently from anything in Sacramento.

The drive from Sacramento to San Francisco is about two hours on a good day, two and a half with traffic. I make that drive regularly and I schedule Bay Area sessions in groups when I can, shooting two or three sessions across a couple of days to make the trip efficient.

San Francisco Hotels

San Francisco has some of the best hotel rooms for boudoir photography in Northern California. The combination of tall windows, bay light, and city views is hard to beat. I have shot at properties along the Embarcadero where the morning light comes off the water and fills the room with a cool, silvery quality. I have worked in boutique hotels near Union Square where the rooms are compact but the windows face south and the afternoon light is warm and directional.

A few properties I have used and recommend: 1 Hotel San Francisco (formerly Hotel Vitale) on the Embarcadero, The Marker on Geary, and the Hotel Drisco in Pacific Heights for something quieter. Room selection matters, and I coordinate with the hotel or with the client to get a room that works for the light I need.

The urban setting outside the hotel also opens up options. I have shot on rooftops, in parking garages with city views, and on quiet side streets in residential neighborhoods where Victorian facades and iron fire escapes become part of the composition.

Coastal Locations

The Northern California coast is not the warm, bright beach you see in Southern California imagery. The sand is dark, the water is cold and rough, and the fog can roll in at any time. That sounds bleak on paper, but for boudoir photography it is some of the most dramatic natural lighting I have access to. Overcast skies act as a giant softbox. The dark sand anchors the image and lets skin tones glow. The cliffs and rock formations along the Marin Headlands and the San Mateo coast add scale and texture.

I plan beach sessions around tides, weather, and time of day. Low tide exposes more rock and gives us more ground to work with. Early morning or late afternoon light is preferred, but overcast days are actually ideal because the light stays consistent for hours instead of changing minute by minute.

These sessions are not for everyone. It can be cold, the footing is uneven, and the wind is real. But the images have a quality that I cannot replicate indoors. If you are drawn to moody, dramatic, editorial-style boudoir, this is where we should be shooting.

Oakland and the East Bay

Oakland has its own character that is worth mentioning. Industrial architecture, murals, converted warehouse spaces, and a creative energy that shows up in the backgrounds. I have shot in the Jack London Square area and in the residential hills above the city where the views across the bay to San Francisco are wide open.

The East Bay is also closer to Sacramento by about 30 minutes, which makes the logistics slightly easier. If you are in the East Bay and want to discuss locations on your side of the bay, I am happy to scout options.

Booking a Bay Area Session

Bay Area sessions require a bit more planning than a local Sacramento shoot. I need to coordinate travel, potentially book a room the night before for early morning sessions, and scout or confirm the location in advance. I recommend reaching out at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for Bay Area bookings.

Pricing starts with the standard session fee from the investment page, plus a travel fee that varies by location. Contact me through the contact page for an exact quote.

Browse the gallery to see work from both Sacramento and Bay Area sessions. The style and approach are the same. The locations just give me a different canvas.
